My Grandpa is in his early 70's. A traditionalist, he has received the newspaper daily for decades and spends every afternoon sitting in his favorite spot on the couch catchin
g up on the world news. He is one of the most well read and informed people I know - but he did not want to touch the internet. He preferred 'hard copy' reading material.
A month ago, his favorite publication ceased the publication of a hard copy version. After the initial shock - he decided to step into the year 2009 and not only order high speed internet, but also get introduced to his new friend - a laptop.
Now daily, instead of reading his newspaper, he surfs blogs. He reads all of his favorite news sources online and last week - asked me what this 'Twitter' thing was all about. My Grandma isn't letting him have all of the fun. She is on instant messenger and IMs me throughout the day. Their friends (also in their 70's) are all 'online' now too, sharing pictures of their grandkids.
Think your company doesn't need to be online? My grandpa just proved you wrong. It's a high-tech world we live in - if your company isn't leveraging the internet for online marketing you're missing the boat.
